Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the main features of the chart, but the information is often inaccurate or confusingly presented. For example, the statement that 'Adelaide is lowest' for cafe visits is not clearly supported by the data, and the description of the categories is often muddled. The report lacks a clear overview of the trends, and the data points provided in the body paragraphs are difficult to follow due to poor sentence structure and unclear comparisons. To improve, you must ensure that the data you select is accurately transcribed and that you clearly distinguish between the three categories (cafe, fresh coffee, instant coffee) for each city.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is frequently unclear. While you use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with' and 'Moreover', the internal logic of the sentences is often broken. For instance, the final paragraph is particularly disjointed, with data points listed without clear context or logical connection to the previous sentences. The referencing is also problematic; it is often unclear which city or category is being discussed in the latter half of the response. Improving the logical flow between sentences and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'had highest' or 'was bought', which does not demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'had least choose by people' and 'instant coffee had highest for more people'. These errors occasionally make the meaning difficult to follow. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise verbs and nouns to describe trends and data, such as 'accounted for', 'the highest proportion', or 'a significant preference for'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'Melbourne had highest' (missing 'the') and 'fresh coffee had bought by individuals' (incorrect passive voice). Sentence structures are often fragmented or incorrectly constructed, such as 'Adelaide further, fresh coffee had bought by individuals in Brisbane...'. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often faulty and lack the necessary control. Focusing on basic sentence construction—ensuring every sentence has a clear subject, verb, and object—will help you reduce these errors and improve your overall accuracy.
