Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates outcomes of a survey regarding coffee and tea consumption and purchasing patterns pf individuals across five cities in Australia.

Overall, the percentage for how often people went to a cafe for coffee or tea in last four weeks was the most popular habit among the residents in almost all cities, whereas, buying fresh coffee was consistently the least preferred option. Additionally, Melbourne and Hobart showed overall highest percentage in both buying and consuming coffee and tea.

Looking into the details, it is clear that visiting to a cafe stood at its highest of 64% in two cities namely Melbourne and Hobart. Following this, Sydney showed 61%. Brisbane and Adelaide 55% and 49% respectively.

When comparing the other two habits, buying instant coffee was generally more preferred to buying fresh coffee in almost all cities. In Hobart, Brisbane and Adelaide, roughly 50% to 54% of people opted for instant coffee. Conversely, buying coffee remained at lowest value across all regions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the popularity of cafe visits and the lower preference for fresh coffee. However, the analysis is slightly uneven; while you mention the highest figures for cafe visits, you could have provided more specific data points for the 'fresh coffee' category to fully support your comparison. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all categories mentioned in the prompt are supported by data, as the current response focuses heavily on cafe visits and instant coffee while leaving fresh coffee data somewhat under-represented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', 'Looking into the details', and 'Conversely' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the phrase 'buying coffee remained at lowest value' lacks a clear link to the previous sentence's comparison. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the data presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consumption', 'purchasing patterns', and 'consistently'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'visiting to a cafe' (should be 'visiting a cafe') and 'buying coffee remained at lowest value' (missing an article, 'the lowest value'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat basic descriptors. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'a significant proportion' or 'a marginal preference'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'percentage for how often people went' (awkward phrasing), 'showed overall highest percentage' (missing article 'the'), and 'visiting to a cafe' (incorrect preposition). Additionally, punctuation is generally correct, but some sentences are slightly clunky. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and prepositional accuracy will help improve the overall fluency and precision of your writing.
