Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you have identified some main features, such as the preference for cafes and the data for instant coffee, the analysis is underdeveloped. You have not fully reported on all categories (fresh coffee is mentioned but not detailed) and the comparisons are limited. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview of all data points presented in the chart and extend your analysis to meet the length requirement, which will allow for a more thorough exploration of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices like 'Meanwhile' and 'By contrast' is present but limited. Paragraphing is used, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the overall logical flow is hindered by the brevity of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'number of' and 'people'. There are also some awkward word choices, such as 'masses' and 'folks', which are too informal for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'majority', and 'minority', and avoid informal colloquialisms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. There are several punctuation errors, such as the misuse of the semicolon after 'weeks' and the unnecessary capitalization of 'In' and 'The'. Additionally, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'proportation' (spelling) and 'average number of masses'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall impression of your control over complex structures.
