IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart exhibit the survey results regarding people's coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities, namely Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart. The data is shown in percentage of city residence, and its category is broken down into 'bought fresh coffee in the last 4 weeks', 'bought instant coffee in the last 4 weeks', and 'went to a cafe for coffee or tea in the last 4 weeks'.
Generally, most people seemed to go to cafe to drink coffee or tea rather than buying instant coffee. This trend is consistent across five cities except for Adelaide, where the percentage of instant coffee buyer is slightly ahead of cafe goer. City with highest 'going to cafe to get coffee or tea' habit is Melbourne at 63%, Followed by Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane and Adelaide at 49.5%.
Data also shows buying fresh coffee is the category least chosen by people. This trend manifests in all five recorded cities. Sydney residents leads in this department, at 44%, and people in Brisbane contributed to the lowest share at 34.5%

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the overall trend of cafe visits being the most popular activity and noted the exception in Adelaide. However, the report could be improved by providing more comprehensive data coverage. For instance, while you mentioned the highest and lowest figures for fresh coffee, you omitted specific data points for instant coffee across the cities, which would have provided a more complete summary. The overview is clear, but the analysis of the data could be more detailed to reach a higher band, ensuring that all significant trends are fully supported by the provided figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph detailing specific data. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Generally', 'However', and 'namely', which help link ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and there is a lack of variety in how you transition between sentences. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure that referencing is precise. For example, the transition between the overview and the final paragraph could be smoother to better integrate the specific data points into the broader narrative.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'exhibit', 'consistent', and 'manifests' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'percentage of city residence' (should be 'residents') and 'instant coffee buyer' (should be plural 'buyers'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that nouns and verbs agree in number. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and adverbs would also help to better characterize the trends shown in the chart.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The bar chart exhibit' (should be 'exhibits'), 'its category is broken down' (should be 'categories are'), and 'Sydney residents leads' (should be 'lead'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage. Proofreading for small errors like pluralization and missing articles will significantly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
