IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates people's consumption habits about coffee and tea in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. The chart is presented in percentage and the survey asked about the last 4 weeks.

Overall, people who went to a cafe for coffee or tea were the highest percentage in 4 cities, while those who brought fresh coffee were the lowest percentage. Adelaide was the only city were people choose to buy more instant coffee instead of going to a cafe.

Between 60% to 65% of people in Sydney, Melbourn and Hobart had been to a cafe in the past 4 weeks; that was by far the highest proportion presented in the chart. People from Adelaide, however, had similar preferences between buying instant coffee and going to a cafe, with 50% and close to 49% respectively.

The lowest amount of purchase for the 5 cities were buying fresh coffee, Brisbane and Adelaide showed 34% of the total, while Hobart, Sydney and Melbourned had 37%, 42% and 44% respectively. In addition, instant coffee was mostly the middle preference for 4 of the cities, with the lowest percentage of 45% in Sydney and the highest proportion of 54% in Hobart.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five cities. You successfully highlighted the general trend of cafe visits being the most popular activity, except in Adelaide. However, the report could be improved by ensuring data accuracy; for instance, you stated that Brisbane and Adelaide showed 34% for fresh coffee, but the chart indicates different values for these cities. Additionally, some comparisons are slightly imprecise. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed accurately from the visual aid and that the overview clearly synthesizes the most significant trends rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'In addition,' and 'however' to link sentences. However, the use of referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the data. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect ideas more fluidly within and between paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consumption habits,' 'proportion,' and 'preferences.' There are some spelling errors, such as 'Melbourn' and 'Melbourned' instead of 'Melbourne,' and minor word choice issues like 'lowest amount of purchase.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, work on using more sophisticated collocations and ensure accurate spelling of proper nouns and technical terms related to data reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The chart is presented in percentage' (should be 'percentages'), 'city were people choose' (should be 'where people chose'), and 'lowest amount of purchase... were' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent tense usage when describing data, and proofreading for minor slips in grammar and punctuation.
