Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is a comparison of people's coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Starting with, we can see different Australian cities in the given chart, where we can see people are more likely to buy coffee or tea from cafe in last four weeks instead of making coffe or tea at home. Some people are still buying fresh coffee, but the number is eventually very less compared to people buying instant coffee and buying coffee from cafe.
On the other hand, we can see that people love to buy coffee and tea from cafes. In all five cities, the percentage of people buying coffee from cafes is above 60% . From the given chart we can also see that people buying instant coffee is higher than people who buy fresh coffee.
In conclusion, I would like to conclude from the given chart there is given that only in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart people are buying fresh coffee more in comparison to the rest of the cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task but lacks the necessary detail required for a high score. While you identify some trends, you fail to provide specific data points from the chart, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. The overview is vague, and the comparisons are underdeveloped. For instance, you mention that percentages are 'above 60%' but do not specify which cities or categories this applies to, nor do you contrast the data across the five cities effectively. To improve, ensure you select key features and support them with accurate figures from the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'we can see'. The progression of ideas is limited, and the conclusion is repetitive rather than summarizing the main trends effectively. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, distinct focus that contributes to the overall summary.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'people are more likely to buy' and 'people love to buy' are used frequently. There is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive language. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to data analysis, such as 'proportion', 'majority', 'significant', or 'marginal', and avoid informal phrasing like 'very less'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder clarity. For example, 'the number is eventually very less' is grammatically incorrect, and 'there is given that' is awkward phrasing. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence construction often feels clunky. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of comparative structures, and aim to reduce errors in basic sentence formation.
