IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given bar graph illustrates the coffee and tea buying and drinking habits of the people of five different cities of Australia, which are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart, where it is evident that the consumption of coffee is much more significant than tea, as people are choosing coffee more than tea.
The graph makes it very evident that majority of people are more interested buying coffee or tea from cafe in every city except Adelaide, where the percentage of instant coffee is 1% more. Furthermore, in all of these cities, citizens are not preferring to buy fresh coffee over instant coffees and cafe products. Reason behind this trend could be the lack of time and tight schedules of there work places.
This could be an accurate explanation for such trend, as buying coffee and tea saves time and effort, and it also helps to stay active and focused due to consumption of caffiene.
Therefore, it can be concluded that, majority of Australians prefer to buy coffee from cafe, rather than making it by themselves, which saves time and energy, which can be utilized in other tasks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of providing a data-driven summary, you have included personal opinions and speculative reasoning, such as 'Reason behind this trend could be the lack of time'. In IELTS Task 1, you must only report the information presented in the chart without adding external explanations or personal theories. While you identified the main trend (coffee consumption being higher than tea), you failed to provide specific data points or meaningful comparisons between the five cities. The response is more of an essay than a report, which significantly impacts the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive feature. However, the logical progression is hindered by the inclusion of irrelevant commentary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Therefore', but they are sometimes used to link ideas that are not supported by the data. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the overall structure feels more like an argumentative response than a data analysis. To improve, focus on grouping the data logically (e.g., comparing cities or categories) rather than writing a narrative based on assumptions.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the precision required for a high-scoring report. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'buying coffee or tea' and 'consumption of coffee'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'citizens are not preferring' (should be 'do not prefer') and 'there work places' (should be 'their workplaces'). To reach a higher band, you should use more specific terminology related to data reporting, such as 'proportion', 'majority', 'significant', or 'marginal difference', and avoid informal language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'majority of people are more interested buying' (missing 'in'), 'there work places' (incorrect homophone), and 'such trend' (missing an article). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
