Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar graph illustrates the outcomes of a survey and is about the habits of the people's experiencing, enjoying tea and coffee in the well-known cities of Australia.
Overall the graph compares the proportion of tea and coffee buying and drinking ratio along the five main cities of Australia. The main thing is that the percentage of each city fluctuates, however, it can't be denied that rate of the people who went to a café for coffee or tea remains on the top besides Adelaide, while the ratio of the people who bought fresh coffee continuously dropped.
In Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane the number of people who went to a café for coffee or tea went up higher, although Melbourne reached to the top of the table approximately 64%, in contrast, in Brisbane there is a sudden decline in the amount of people who bought fresh coffee.
The most important and common thing in both Adelaide and Hobart was the proportion of the people who bought fresh coffee remain declining, however the number of people who bought instant coffee were in Adelaide in comparison to other cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear, accurate overview. While it identifies some trends, the analysis is often vague or inaccurate. For instance, the claim that the rate of people visiting a café 'remains on the top' is unclear, and the description of the data for Adelaide and Hobart is confusing. The response lacks a clear selection of key features; instead, it provides disjointed observations. To improve, you must ensure that your summary accurately reflects the data presented in the chart and provides clear comparisons between the five cities rather than listing isolated, sometimes confusing, observations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as the phrase 'in contrast' which does not effectively link the preceding and following ideas. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between cities. For example, the final sentence is grammatically fragmented and lacks a clear connection to the rest of the paragraph. Improving the use of transition signals and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. Phrases like 'the main thing is that' and 'the number of people... went up higher' are informal and lack the academic tone required for Task 1. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'outcomes of a survey' (results) and 'the ratio of the people' (proportion). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated,' 'accounted for,' or 'a significant proportion,' and avoid repetitive or colloquial phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with article usage ('the rate of the people'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. For example, 'Melbourne reached to the top of the table approximately 64%' is grammatically incorrect. The attempt at complex sentences often results in awkward phrasing or errors, such as the final sentence which lacks a main verb for the second clause. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and preposition usage would help improve your accuracy.
