Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the data provided, but it fails to present a clear overview or highlight the most significant trends. The information is presented in a fragmented, city-by-city list rather than a comparative analysis. Several claims are inaccurate based on the data (e.g., stating fresh coffee consumption is highest in Melbourne, when the chart shows Hobart is significantly higher). The lack of a clear summary and the inclusion of inaccurate data points prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on grouping data logically and identifying key trends, such as which city has the highest overall consumption or which beverage is most popular across the board.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks effective paragraphing, appearing as a single, dense block of text. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and repetitive way, such as the constant repetition of 'the percentage of the city residents'. There is no clear logical progression between sentences; the transition between cities is abrupt and confusing. The lack of structural variety makes the text difficult to follow. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, and vary your linking words to create a smoother flow between ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'the percentage of the city residents' are used repeatedly, which hinders the fluency of the writing. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'buying the coffee, tea and drinking habit' and 'the forth city'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends or comparisons effectively. To improve, try to use a wider variety of synonyms for 'percentage' (e.g., 'proportion', 'figure', 'rate') and learn specific collocations for describing data, such as 'accounted for', 'stood at', or 'experienced a peak'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with article usage (e.g., 'in the Sydney', 'in the Melbourne'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, making them difficult to parse. There is very little evidence of complex sentence structures; most sentences are simple or poorly constructed compound sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic article usage and sentence boundaries. Practice combining simple sentences into more complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control.
