Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear or accurate overview. The main features are not effectively highlighted, and the reporting of data is inconsistent and confusing. For instance, the claim that Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart have 'the same percentage of about 60%' for all three categories is a significant overgeneralization that misrepresents the data. Furthermore, the comparison between cities is vague and lacks the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, you must carefully extract specific data points from the chart and present them accurately, ensuring that comparisons are based on clear evidence rather than broad, inaccurate statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a logical structure. While there is an attempt at an introduction and body paragraphs, the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes incorrect, such as the awkward transition 'In details,' and the run-on sentence structure in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively separate the different categories of data. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast,' 'whereas,' 'consequently') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus to guide the reader through the information logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic phrasing. There are several instances of inaccurate word choice, such as 'ration' instead of 'ratio' or 'proportion,' and 'civilians' to refer to survey respondents, which is inappropriate in this context. The phrase 'used to went to the cafe' is also grammatically and lexically incorrect. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion,' 'percentage,' 'fluctuated,' or 'remained stable,' and avoid informal or imprecise language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, such as 'Brisbane and Adelaide has' and 'Brisbane has 56% of the individuals used to went.' There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas and periods. The tense usage is also inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and sentence construction. Practice combining simple sentences into complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
