Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the trends for cafe visits, instant coffee, and fresh coffee across the five cities. However, the overview is slightly confusing; stating that cafe visits were 'most popular' in all cities except Adelaide is accurate, but the description of the trends for instant and fresh coffee is a bit muddled. To improve, ensure your overview clearly synthesizes the most significant trends without listing too many specific figures, which should be reserved for the body paragraphs. Overall, you have provided a clear summary of the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In detail', 'While', 'In contrast', and 'Whereas' to connect ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final sentence where the comparison to Adelaide is abrupt. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between the data points could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that comparisons are explicitly stated will help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'inhabitants', 'purchasing', and 'consuming'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'showed a considerable rise and decline trend' and 'visited to a cafe'. Additionally, 'populace' is used slightly awkwardly in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are natural and contextually appropriate for a formal report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the percentage... were') and awkward phrasing ('visited to a cafe for coffee or tea in previous month'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing articles and preposition errors. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the data. To reach a higher band, focus on refining your control over complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles and prepositions.
