Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying key trends across the five cities. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. While you successfully highlight the popularity of cafes, the description of the data for Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide is confusing. You mention a 'downward trend' for cafe visits and fresh coffee, but the data provided in the prompt does not clearly support this as a trend over time, as the chart represents a static survey. Furthermore, the comparison between cities is occasionally vague, and some figures are presented without sufficient clarity to allow the reader to fully grasp the differences between the categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'Whereas' to link ideas. However, the flow is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For instance, the transition 'On the remaining information' is not standard academic English. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track which city or category is being discussed in the final paragraph. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, using terms like 'negligible difference', 'increment', and 'downward trend'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'drop down of instant coffee consumers' instead of 'a decline in instant coffee consumption' and 'people went to cafe' instead of 'people who visited cafes'. Some phrasing is repetitive, and there is a lack of more sophisticated or varied vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focus on using more precise nouns and verbs to describe statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Sydney have negligible difference', 'Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide shows') and article usage (e.g., 'went to cafe'). There are also issues with prepositional usage and tense consistency. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve your score.
