Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively identifies the main trends and makes relevant comparisons between the five cities. You have successfully highlighted the popularity of cafe visits compared to the lower figures for fresh coffee. However, the report could be improved by ensuring all data points are presented with greater precision. For instance, phrases like 'nearly about' or 'around at' are redundant and slightly imprecise. While you have covered the key features, a more analytical approach—perhaps grouping cities by their shared trends rather than listing them city-by-city—would elevate the response to a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the main features are clearly communicated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Along with this', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. For example, the transition between the instant coffee data and the fresh coffee data in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, but ensure that your cohesive devices are used to link ideas more fluidly rather than just acting as signposts at the start of sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'significant ratio', and 'illustrates'. However, there are some inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'brought fresh coffee' (should be 'bought') and 'most of cities' (should be 'most of the cities'). Additionally, phrases like 'nearly about' and 'around at' are grammatically awkward and demonstrate a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'predominated', 'marginal', or 'a substantial proportion', and ensure that your word choices are consistently accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with prepositions and articles, such as 'in sydney' (should be 'in Sydney') and 'the majority of individuals' (missing 'the'). The phrase 'followed by Brisbane was at 43%' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'followed by Brisbane at 43%'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions in statistical descriptions will help improve your accuracy.
