Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the high points for cafe visits in Melbourne and Hobart and the lower figures for fresh coffee purchases. However, the overview is missing; a summary of the main trends is essential for a higher band. The report is somewhat mechanical, listing figures city by city rather than synthesizing the information to make meaningful comparisons. While the data is generally accurate, the lack of a clear, overarching summary and the repetitive structure of the sentences limit the score. To improve, ensure you include an introductory overview that highlights the most significant differences or trends across the five cities.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between sentences is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with 'The ratio of'. There is a lack of variety in linking words, which makes the progression of ideas feel mechanical. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between the different categories (cafe visits, instant coffee, fresh coffee) is abrupt. To improve, use a wider range of linking phrases (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', 'Conversely') to connect ideas more fluidly and improve the overall logical progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'ratio of' and 'at almost' are used repeatedly, which restricts the range. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'habbits', 'hihgest', 'slighlty', 'upper', and 'Hobar'. These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use a more varied vocabulary to describe trends and data points, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'peaked at', or 'remained stable', and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'The chart illustrate', 'Brisbane and Aldelaide lies') and incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'between in 45 to 55 percent'). The sentence construction is often awkward, such as 'The ratio of went to cafe for coffee or tea is on hihgest point'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence structure prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence variety and correcting basic subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your score.
