Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by identifying some main features, such as the high cafe attendance in Melbourne and Hobart. However, the report is incomplete and lacks a clear overview. It fails to effectively compare the three categories (cafe visits, instant coffee, fresh coffee) across all five cities. The data presentation is repetitive, and the analysis is superficial, often just listing figures rather than synthesizing information. The student incorrectly refers to the five cities as 'countries' throughout the text, which is a significant factual error that impacts the accuracy of the report. To improve, ensure you provide a clear summary of trends and group data logically rather than listing each city individually.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and repetitive way, such as starting multiple sentences with 'The ratio of'. Referencing is often unclear, and the transition between the different categories of coffee habits is abrupt. The lack of variety in linking words makes the text feel like a list of isolated facts rather than a cohesive report. To improve, use a wider range of cohesive devices like 'in contrast', 'similarly', or 'whereas' to connect ideas and create a smoother flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on the word 'ratio' to describe percentages, which is often inaccurate in this context. There are also frequent spelling errors, such as 'whuch', 'Melborne', 'Adeliade', and 'propotion'. The misuse of 'countries' instead of 'cities' is a persistent lexical error that undermines the quality of the writing. While the basic meaning is conveyed, the range is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your vocabulary to include terms like 'proportion', 'percentage', 'figure', and 'trend' would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('Sydney have lowest ratio') and article usage. Sentence structures are simple and repetitive, with little attempt at complex sentences. There are also punctuation errors, such as spaces before periods. The frequent misuse of 'ratio' and the confusion between 'countries' and 'cities' indicate a lack of control over basic sentence construction. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and varying your sentence structure by using subordinate clauses. Proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms is essential to reach a higher band.
