Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the data provided in the chart. However, the analysis is inconsistent and lacks clarity. While the student identifies some figures, the comparisons are often confusing or inaccurate (e.g., stating that demand for fresh coffee 'remains same' while citing different percentages). The overview is weak and does not clearly highlight the main trends or significant differences across the five cities. The report lacks a professional tone, using conversational phrases like 'We will discuss about that in this conversation,' which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, focus on identifying clear trends and grouping data logically rather than listing figures city by city.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and poor transitions. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes incorrect, such as 'In the next' to introduce a new category. Referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons between cities and coffee types. The lack of clear signposting between the different categories (fresh coffee, instant coffee, and cafe visits) hinders the overall progression of the report. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'people prefer to buying' instead of 'people prefer buying' and 'spend much interest' which is not a standard collocation. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe data trends, relying on basic descriptors like 'high' or 'drop'. Spelling errors are also present, such as 'Caffe' (Cafe) and 'camare' (compare). To reach a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary to include more precise terms for describing data, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', or 'predominant', and pay closer attention to standard English collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with verb tenses and forms, such as 'like to went to Caffe' instead of 'like going to cafes'. Subject-verb agreement is also problematic, for example, 'it depict' instead of 'it depicts'. Sentence structures are generally simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as run-on sentences or missing prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. A stronger focus on basic sentence construction, correct verb forms, and proofreading for minor slips is essential for improvement.
