Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers all five cities and the three categories of data. However, it fails to provide a clear overview or summary of the main trends, which is a requirement for Task 1. Instead, the response is a repetitive, list-like description of each city. There is no attempt to compare the data effectively; for example, noting that Hobart and Melbourne share the highest cafe attendance or that Brisbane leads in fresh coffee consumption. The lack of an overview and the failure to synthesize the information significantly limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks paragraphing, appearing as one long, dense block of text. This makes it difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are extremely limited and often misused, such as 'first of fall' (likely meant 'first of all') and the repetitive use of 'now' to transition between cities. The progression of ideas is mechanical rather than logical, as the writer simply moves from one city to the next without grouping information or highlighting significant relationships between the data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The phrase 'bought of' is used incorrectly throughout the text instead of 'purchase of' or 'consumption of'. Other errors include 'very high bought range' and 'less bought ratio'. There is no attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends or data; the writer relies on basic, inaccurate phrasing that hinders the clarity of the report. To improve, the student needs to learn collocations related to data reporting and avoid repeating the same basic verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede readability. There is a lack of punctuation, with many run-on sentences and missing full stops. Subject-verb agreement is often incorrect, such as 'the fresh coffee that has is been bought'. The use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent throughout. While the writer attempts to construct sentences, the lack of control over basic grammar and sentence structure results in a very low level of accuracy. Complex structures are absent.
