Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main features of the chart, providing a general overview and selecting some specific data points such as the percentages for Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart. However, the response contains notable factual confusions; for instance, Hobart is mentioned as having a high rate of buying instant coffee as well as café visits, and the selection of data is somewhat haphazard rather than systematically structured. While the main trends are touched upon, key comparisons between all five cities and the three categories are not fully or accurately developed. This performance aligns best with Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into an introduction and three body paragraphs, showing a basic attempt at paragraphing. However, overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and somewhat confusing logical sequencing, particularly within the long third paragraph where multiple cities and categories are jumbled together. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inadequately (e.g., 'Whereas', 'In comparison to these two'), and referencing is occasionally unclear. This demonstrates the characteristics of Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the prompt, such as 'purchasing', 'percentage', and 'fresh coffee'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'intaking habits of caffeine', 'went to cafe', and 'higer rate', along with awkward phrasing like 'people who bought fresh coffee are not much'. These errors cause some slight distraction for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('three of them Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart shows', 'the cities where people have preffered') and incorrect prepositions or relative clauses ('highest percentage is in sydney that is nearly 44%'). While communication is generally maintained, the frequency of errors places this performance at Band 5.0.
