The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the results of a survey conducted in the last four weeks about people's habits of buying and drinking coffee and tea in five Australian cities, namely Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart.

Overall, the proportion was by far the highest in Melbourne for individuals who went to a cafe for coffee or tea, following by Hobart. However, the percentage is higher in Hobart for those who bought instant coffee, and it is higher in Sydney for fresh coffee purchase during a month ago.

For fresh coffee purchase, people accounted for around 44% in Sydney and 42% in Melbourne, whereas the figure experienced a decline in Brisbane, at approximately 34%, and remained unchanged in Adelaide before rising in Hobart, at around 38%. For instant coffee buyers, Sydney accounted for 45%, while Melbourne showed a slight increase by standing at approximately 44%. But the proportion was almost 53% in Brisbane, 50% in Adelaide, and almost 55% in Hobart, with the higher percentage than other cities.

The proportion was the highest in all cities for those who went to a cafe for coffee and tea, with Adelaide being the only exception. Sydney accounted for almost 61% and Melbourne accounted for around 64%, whereas the proportions were approximately 50%, 45% and 63% for Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart, respectively.
