Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart compares the percentages of residents in five Australian cities who bought fresh coffee, bought instant coffee, or visited a cafe for coffee or tea during the previous four weeks.
Overall, it is evident that visiting cafes was the most popular activity in all five cities, while buying fresh coffee was generally the least common. Melbourne and Hobart recorded the highest proportions of cafe visitors, whereas Adelaide had the lowest figures of both fresh coffee purchases and cafe visits.
Turning to the data, in terms of going to a cafe, the percentages were highest in Melbourne and Hobart. Sydney followed at approximately 61%, while Brisbane and Adelaide recorded lower figures of roughly 55% and 50% respectively.
Furthermore, purchasing instant coffee was also common, particularly in Hobart and Brisbane, where around 54% and 53% of residents bought it. Moreover, the figures for Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney were slightly lower, at approximately 50%, 48% and 46% respectively.
By contrast, buying fresh coffee was less popular across all cities. Sydney had the highest proportion at about 44%, followed closely by Melbourne at 43%. The figures were considerably lower in Hobart, Brisbane and Adelaide, making fresh coffee the least preferred option in these cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear and comprehensive summary of the visual data. The response successfully highlights the main features and makes relevant comparisons across the five Australian cities. For instance, the overview accurately notes that visiting cafes was the most popular activity overall, while fresh coffee purchases were the least common. The details provided, such as Sydney's 44% fresh coffee purchase rate and Melbourne and Hobart's high cafe visitation figures, closely align with the provided data. The information is well-selected, logically structured, and meets all the requirements for a high band score under this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The text is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introductory paraphrase, followed by an overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs covering cafe visits, instant coffee purchases, and fresh coffee purchases respectively. Cohesive devices are used appropriately and flexibly to guide the reader through the data, as seen in transition phrases like "Turning to the data", "Furthermore", and "By contrast". Referencing is clear throughout, and paragraphing is skillfully managed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for this task type. Phrases such as "highest proportions", "comparatively lower figures", and "least preferred option" show good control and an awareness of collocation suitable for describing statistical trends. While the vocabulary is fairly standard for academic tasks rather than exceptionally sophisticated, it is deployed with precision and accuracy, allowing the message to be communicated fluently without any strain for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases smoothly (e.g., "making fresh coffee the least preferred option in these cities"). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is strong throughout. Minor errors are absent, and punctuation is handled correctly. The syntactic variety supports clear communication and meets the criteria for a solid band 7.
