Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting data from the bar graph, but the response suffers from significant weaknesses in data interpretation and feature selection. The overview section contains confusing and inaccurate statements, such as claiming that the habits 'slightily decreased before reaching the peak in the final year'—which does not accurately reflect a static survey chart without a timeline. Furthermore, the body paragraphs struggle to accurately report the data points, containing vague phrasing and misread percentages, such as 'Sydney bought 43% fresh coffee'. While the response does mention categories like fresh coffee, instant coffee, and cafés, the delivery lacks clarity and fails to make clear, relevant comparisons across the five cities, pulling the task achievement score down into the lower bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, including a clear introduction and an overall summary. However, the logical progression within the body paragraphs is severely disrupted by confusing sentence structures, mechanical transitions, and referencing errors. Phrases like 'According to the graph, Sydney bought 43% fresh coffee which increased to nearly 45% instant coffee' incorrectly link static data points as if they were a chronological progression. Cohesive devices are used repetitively ('Moreover', 'However'), and referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the intended comparisons between cities and coffee habits.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with numerous spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally impede communication. Examples of spelling errors include 'Austrialian', 'slightily', 'ths', 'reacking', 'coffe', 'foced', 'strightly', and 'decline'. The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'purchasing', 'consumption', and 'percentage', but lacks the precision required for higher bands. Collocations are sometimes awkward or unnatural, such as 'cafe for coffee went to cafe about 62% foced to be gradual increased'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is limited, consisting largely of simple and flawed complex sentences. There are frequent and systematic errors in tense usage, verb forms, and clause structures. For instance, the writer incorrectly treats static survey data as ongoing or past actions with words like 'bought', 'increased', and 'was decline'. Sentences often lack essential grammatical elements or are poorly joined, such as 'Moreover, bought 48% instant coffee in Melbourne which minimally decreased almost 41%'. Punctuation and word order errors are widespread, causing constant strain for the reader.
