IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
The given chart provides the data about five Australian cities. It describes the public habits in buying and drinking coffee from the different cities shops during four weeks.
To begin with, it is clearly evident that there are three types of individuals who like to buy several types of coffee. Some loves to use fresh coffee while others like to drink instant coffee whereas some people used to drink both tea and coffee.
On the other hand, there are five cities Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. If we look at those who like to drink fresh coffee the percentage of those are almost similar in all cities. As if we are talking about the instant coffee users the percentage of those are very low in Sydney. However, in remaining cities the percentage of those are almost equal. Hence, the percentage of people who used both coffee and tea is diminished in Brisbane while it the Sydney. In Sydney the percentage of those increases to 43%. Hobart percentage is only 38%

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to summarize the chart, but it fails to accurately report the main features and data. For example, the student states that the percentage of fresh coffee users is 'almost similar in all cities,' ignoring clear variations such as Sydney (44%) and Brisbane (34.5%). Furthermore, the descriptions of instant coffee and café visits are severely confused and factually incorrect (e.g., claiming instant coffee use is 'very low in Sydney' when it is actually 45.5%, and misinterpreting the third category as 'both coffee and tea'). Because of the significant misinterpretation of the visual data and lack of a coherent overview, this falls under Band 4.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall arrangement are weak. While transitional phrases like 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand' are used, they are applied inappropriately given the context of describing statistical data. Referencing is frequently unclear (e.g., 'the percentage of those are almost equal,' 'it the Sydney'). The flow of information is disjointed, and the relationships between ideas are difficult to follow, leading to a Band 4 performance for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies in word choice and collocation (e.g., 'public habits,' 'Some loves to use fresh coffee,' 'diminished in Brisbane'). Vocabulary specific to data reporting, such as 'proportion,' 'percentage,' or 'fluctuate,' is missing. The student relies on basic terms, and errors in word form and expression occasionally strain the reader's understanding, which aligns with the Band 4 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The student attempts some complex structures, but these are often faulty or incomplete (e.g., 'As if we are talking about the instant coffee users the percentage of those are very low'). There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('some loves,' 'the percentage... are') and missing prepositions or articles. Punctuation is also neglected at the end of sentences. Although simple structures can be understood, the frequency of errors places this response at Band 4.
