Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the chart regarding coffee and tea buying and drinking habits across five Australian cities. An overview is provided, noting that visiting a café was the most popular activity and buying fresh coffee was the lowest. However, the student misinterprets several data points and labels. For instance, the text claims that fresh coffee demand reached '43 percent in higher range and 34 at the lowest one,' whereas the chart shows fresh coffee ranging from 34.5% to 44%, and instant coffee was actually higher in most cities. Furthermore, the phrasing is sometimes confusing, such as grouping coffee and tea together incorrectly or describing categories as 'very rejected.' While main features are touched upon, the lack of accurate data reporting pulls the score down to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is written as a single block of text with virtually no paragraphing, which significantly impacts its readability and visual structure. Although some basic cohesive devices are used to link sentences (such as 'overall,' 'Furthermore,' 'Moreover,' and 'So'), they are often applied awkwardly or mechanically. The logical progression is hindered by poor sentence construction and a lack of clear separation between the introduction, body overview, and specific city comparisons. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'those citizen who prefer the fresh drinks was very rejected.' These issues align with a Band 5.0 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts to use some topic-related vocabulary, such as 'consumption,' 'proportion,' 'citizen,' and 'demand.' However, the range is limited and repetition occurs. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'drinking perspective,' 'individual like' (instead of individuals like), 'fresh drinks was very rejected,' and 'instant way.' These inaccuracies occasionally cause confusion for the reader, though the general topic remains discernible. Spelling is generally acceptable, but collocation and word choice are weak, placing this performance securely at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Given table illustrates,' 'people who keen,' 'mostly individual like,' 'citizen... was very rejected'), missing articles ('the result about a survey'), and awkward prepositional phrases. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with missing spaces after commas and periods. Because errors are frequent and occasionally impede smooth reading, the grammar is evaluated at a Band 5.0 level.
