Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student covers all three categories from the chart and attempts to provide an overview. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that Melbourne recorded the highest percentage of people going to a café at approximately 63%, whereas Hobart was actually 63% and Melbourne was 63.5%, but more notably, Sydney was 61%. Furthermore, the claim that 'individuals purchasing fresh coffee were lowest among all whereas those buying instant coffee increased gradually' misreads the chart's structural presentation of discrete categories rather than a temporal progression. Some figures lack precision or are vaguely stated as 'less than 45 percentage.' The response meets the minimum word count of 150 words (158 words), but the task achievement is hindered by inaccuracies in data selection and interpretation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text is divided into four paragraphs, including a short introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is an attempt to logically sequence ideas, using cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', 'by contrast', and 'Whereas'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or imprecise. For example, 'On the other hand' is used repeatedly in close succession without contrasting opposing ideas effectively. Paragraphing is present, but the division separates related concepts awkwardly. Referencing is mostly clear, but the overall progression of ideas feels somewhat disjointed due to the structural limitations of the body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with terms related to the survey topic such as 'purchasing', 'districts', 'residents' (though 'individual's habit' contains a grammatical error), and 'percentage'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are often marred by word choice or spelling errors, such as 'aproximately' (approximately) and 'percenatage' (percentage). The range is limited but minimally adequate to convey the general meaning, fitting the Band 5 descriptors where noticeable spelling errors and awkward phrasing occur.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Overall, it can be seen that people going to cafe for coffee and tea were recorded to be the highest...' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with missing pluralisation, articles, and prepositions (e.g., 'individual's habit', 'people going to cafe', 'individual buying fresh coffee', 'Adelaide shows the lowest percentage of individual going to cafe'). Punctuation is also faulty in places, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'Brisbane,Adelaide'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited range of well-controlled complex structures.
