Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features across all five cities and making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the general trend accurately, noting that visiting a café was most popular while buying fresh coffee was generally the least common. Data points are cited with reasonable accuracy, such as noting Sydney's figures (44% fresh, 45% instant, 61% café) and Melbourne's café percentage of 63.5% as the highest. Although there are some minor inaccuracies in reading precise figures (e.g., Hobart fresh coffee being closer to 38.5% rather than 33%), the key trends and comparisons are successfully selected and reported. This satisfies the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0, and is best placed at Band 6.0 due to some under-developed details and minor data misreadings.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs separated by city groupings. There is a logical overall arrangement. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. Phrases like 'Moving towards the remaining cities' and 'Followed by Adelaide' are used, but transitions can be awkward ('while buying fresh coffee is last common' and grammatical awkwardness in paragraph transitions). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers from run-on phrasing and missing linkers. These issues place the response firmly in Band 6, where cohesion is sometimes faulty and referencing is not always clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms such as 'residents', 'percentage', and 'popular activity'. However, there are numerous word choice, collocation, and form errors throughout the text. For instance, 'bar chat' instead of 'bar chart', 'visiting to a café for drink a coffee' instead of 'visiting a café to drink coffee', and 'bought fresh coffee' used where the noun 'buying' or passive verb forms are required. These lexical errors and awkward formations (e.g., 'last common' instead of 'least common', 'brought' instead of 'bought') restrict the score to Band 5.0, as the errors are noticeable and occasionally cause slight strain for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures ('compare with', 'whereas', 'while'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors in tense, verb forms, and prepositional use. Examples include 'people like to bought fresh coffee', 'people bought instant coffee' (missing relative pronouns or participles), 'want to café' instead of 'went to a café', and 'Malborne bought of fresh coffee'. Punctuation is also problematic in places (e.g., missing conjunctions, comma splices). These frequent errors place the response at Band 5.0, as complex structures are often faulty and errors persist throughout.
