Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the chart regarding coffee and tea habits in five Australian cities, providing an overview and some specific data points such as the high percentage for café visits in Sydney and Melbourne, and instant coffee in Hobart. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and imprecise descriptions of the data. For instance, the phrasing 'went to cafe for coffee or tea had a significant higher' is clumsy and the numerical comparisons lack precision, often rounding loosely or confusing proportions. While the key trends (café visits being highest overall, followed by instant, then fresh coffee) are partially captured, the lack of thorough support and numerous vague data references prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The task is addressed, but the development and accuracy of details are limited.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organised into basic paragraphs, starting with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body details. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and poor sentence structuring. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, such as 'Conversely', 'However, In Melbourne', and 'on the other hand', which do not always signal logical contrast correctly in this context. Furthermore, referencing is weak, with pronoun usage and clause linkage often unclear or absent. While the overall text can be followed with some effort, the mechanical application of cohesion and lack of smooth logical flow place this response firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range used is basic and heavily repetitive, relying on simple terms like 'survey', 'graph', 'cities', 'coffee', 'tea', and 'proportion'. There are noticeable word formation and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'illustrate information regarding the survey' instead of 'illustrates data from a survey', 'went to cafe for coffee or tea had a significant higher' (using a verb phrase as a noun subject with a grammatical error), and 'bought fresh had lowest in Brisbane'. These lexical limitations and awkward word choices cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted vocabulary suitable for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent and systematic errors in basic sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and word class. Examples include 'The given bar graph illustrate' (singular/plural mismatch), 'went to cafe for coffee or tea had a significant higher in all the cites' (missing subject and incorrect adjective form), and missing articles or prepositions throughout. Complex structures are consistently faulty. These persistent errors frequently cause strain for the reader, though the core meaning remains partially understandable, aligning with the descriptors for Band 4.5 or 5.0.
