Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart across the five Australian cities. An overview is attempted, noting the general popularity of café visits compared to fresh coffee. However, the overview contains some slight inaccuracies regarding the trends (e.g. claiming instant coffee was mostly liked overall, when café visits actually held the highest percentages in most cities). Furthermore, some specific data points contain minor inaccuracies, such as stating Hobart's instant coffee rose to 'approximately 52%' when it was actually around 54.5%, and spelling errors in city names like 'Brishane' and 'syndeny'. Nevertheless, the key comparisons between fresh coffee, instant coffee, and café visits are made, satisfying the basic requirements for a Band 5.5 to 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and subsequent body paragraphs discussing café visits, instant coffee, and fresh coffee respectively. However, the overall progression is somewhat disjointed due to awkward transitions and repetitive phrasing ('In the last four weeks'). Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or mechanically, such as 'In contast' and 'It's mean'. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the response, but referencing is occasionally unclear. This places the response solidly in the Band 5.0 to 5.5 range for organisation and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'percentage', 'trend', 'individuals', and 'ratio'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including misspelled proper nouns ('Brishane', 'syndeny', 'contast', 'instand') and awkward word combinations like 'highest trend' and 'ratio of fresh coffee lovers'. The vocabulary is mostly basic or repetitive, and word-choice errors occasionally require the reader to interpret the intended meaning. These limitations prevent the response from achieving a Band 6.0, aligning it with Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('the percentage of people who went...') and subordinate clauses ('While the ratio...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The percentage of people... are more', 'Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide each accounts') and tense/preposition usage. Punctuation errors, such as missing commas before introductory clauses and incorrect capitalization, are also noticeable. While communication is not severely impeded, the high frequency of grammatical mistakes restricts the score to a 5.0.
