Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting data for all five cities and three categories (buying fresh coffee, instant coffee, and going to a café). An overview is provided at the beginning, noting that all cities have their own ratios, though it could be more precise about overall trends (e.g., cafés being the most popular activity overall). Main features and comparisons are attempted, such as noting Sydney's café figures and contrasting Hobart. However, some data points are inaccurate or vague, such as stating Brisbane has a 'similar percentage of people around 55% who bought instant coffee and went to cafe', whereas the chart shows 53% for instant coffee and 55.5% for café (which is acceptable, but the comparison lacks precision). The phrasing throughout is somewhat repetitive and informal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic overall progression, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by body details. However, paragraphing is poorly managed, as the entire detailed body of the essay is crammed into one single, overly long and dense paragraph ('Now, turning into the details...'). Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as 'Now, turning into the details, firstly', 'On other hand', 'By contast', and 'In comparison'. Pronoun referencing and signposting are also at times confusing, which disrupts the flow of comparisons between the five cities.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with terms directly related to the prompt such as 'chart', 'survey', 'cities', 'coffee', 'tea', and 'percentage'. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable vocabulary and collocation errors, such as 'ratio of people' used repeatedly instead of 'percentage' or 'proportion', 'rise up graph', and 'boost in ratio'. There are also spelling errors like 'coffe' and 'wwho'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing articles ('the given chart illustrate' instead of 'illustrates'), incorrect prepositions, and run-on sentences ('Finally, Hobart has same rise up graph with has lowest ratio...'). Punctuation and spacing errors also occur frequently, such as missing spaces after commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors prevents the response from reaching Band 6.
