Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the chart, mentioning cafe visits, fresh coffee, and instant coffee across the five cities. However, the task achievement is hindered by inaccuracies in data interpretation and expression. For instance, the student states 'Hobart people ratio was 33%' for fresh coffee, whereas the chart shows approximately 38.5%. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat vague and focuses on minor details rather than overarching trends, such as noting that cafe visits generally outpaced purchasing habits across most cities. While the prompt's requirements are partially met, the ideas are under-developed and lack precision, placing this response at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response attempts a four-paragraph structure, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and mechanical cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore, in case of those people who buying instantly, therefore the Sydney had...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is confused, jumping erratically between categories. Cohesive devices are often inaccurate or overused, and referencing is unclear in sentences like 'those people who went to cafe these ratio are high than others'. These issues align closely with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on awkward phrasing like 'those people who buying fresh coffee' and 'huge ratio'. There are noticeable word choice errors and non-standard collocations throughout the text, such as 'equlibrium results', 'buying instantly', and spelling errors like 'Melbournea' and 'catagories'. The range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, causing some difficulty for the reader due to unnatural phrasing. This corresponds to a Band 5.0 for Lexical Resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are almost uniformly faulty. Grammatical errors are frequent, including missing verbs ('while the Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart have been no huge difference'), incorrect prepositions, and severe fragment sentences ('for purchasing like 61%, 63% and 62% respectively'). These errors cause frequent strain and difficulty for the reader in parsing the intended meaning. Control over basic sentence architecture is weak, fitting the Band 4.0 descriptor.
