Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the chart, but it contains several inaccurate interpretations of the data. For example, the student claims that Melbourne accounted for the largest share in going to a cafe, whereas Hobart and Sydney had similar high figures, and incorrectly states that 'bought instant coffee... experienced an upward trend' over the period shown, when the data represents a single static survey period across five cities rather than a time series. Furthermore, some data points are misreported, such as stating that instant coffee accounted for 54% in general rather than specifying city breakdowns. Because of these factual inaccuracies and the misinterpretation of the chart type, the response falls into the Band 5 range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organized into paragraphs, including an introduction, body points, and a concluding sentence, giving it an overall structural arrangement. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing statements, such as 'This was followed bybought instant cofee...'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, leading to a lack of clear logical flow between sentences. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and the conclusion introduces sweeping generalizations not supported by the data ('fresh cofeeexperienced downward trend across 5 cities'). Paragraphing is present but under-managed, which pulls the coherence score down to Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary with frequent spelling errors ('cofee', 'australian') and repetitive phrasing ('bought fresh cofee in last 4 weeks'). While there are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary related to the prompt, word choices and collocations are often inaccurate or unidiomatic. The lack of precision and recurrent mechanical spelling mistakes throughout the text restrict the lexical score to Band 5, as the vocabulary is barely adequate to communicate the task requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors in capitalization, missing spaces after punctuation, and awkward phrasing such as 'Melbourne is accounted for the largest share'. Verb tense and voice usage are also problematic, as seen in 'went to a cafe... reached a peak... before dropping slightly' when describing discrete cities on a bar chart rather than a chronological timeline. These recurrent grammatical errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, aligning the performance with Band 5 descriptors.
