Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover the main features of the chart, including cafes, fresh coffee, and instant coffee across the five cities. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that the percentage of people who 'went to a cafe... and bought instant coffee are higher than bought instant coffee in all five cities' (which contains a confusing contradiction). Furthermore, figures are misreported in several places, such as claiming fresh coffee buyers in Sydney and Melbourne are around 45% (actual: 44% and 42.5%) while misinterpreting other categories. The overview is weak and confused. Overall, this corresponds to Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for different categories. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by confusing phrasing and mechanical cohesive devices. For example, expressions like 'Speaking about last graph' and 'other two representative do not follow same trend' create logical gaps and make the relationships between ideas unclear. Referencing is occasionally faulty. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak. This fits Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms ('percentages', 'people', 'cities', 'bought'). There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'people who want to bough instant coffee stands', 'representative', and 'last graph' instead of 'category' or 'chart'. Spelling errors also occur ('bough' instead of 'bought'). Vocabulary control is restricted, leading to occasional difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise meaning, which aligns with Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but frequent grammatical errors impede communication and reduce clarity. Examples of errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('percentages of people went... are higher'), missing prepositions ('in last 4 weeks'), and incorrect clause structures ('while Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide their percentages stand...'). Complex sentences are often faulty. This demonstrates the characteristics of Band 5 grammar.
