Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart across all five Australian cities. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the general dominance of café visits and the higher consumption of instant coffee compared to fresh coffee. Key data points and comparisons are appropriately selected, such as noting that Melbourne had the highest proportion of café visits while Adelaide had the lowest. The figures reported are generally accurate and align well with the provided visual data, with only minor deviations that do not impact the overall analysis. The response meets all the requirements for a well-rounded Task Achievement score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically by cities and categories, and paragraphs are used effectively to separate different sections of the analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'In terms of', and 'Regarding' are used flexibly to guide the reader through the data. Although referencing is occasionally a bit repetitive in sentence structure, the overall arrangement is coherent, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate and generally sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to surveys, data representation, and consumption habits (e.g., 'proportion', 'residents', 'consumption'). There are attempts to use less common phrases, though some expressions feel slightly unnatural or repetitive, such as 'habits of buying and drinking of coffee and tea'. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully utilizing introductory adverbial clauses ('In terms of Sydney in the last 4 weeks', 'As far as Melbourne is concerned'). There are some minor grammatical awkwardnesses, such as 'the habits of buying and drinking of coffee and tea by the city residents', but these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the majority of straightforward sentences are grammatically accurate.
