IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the survey results of coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five cities in Australia on three different categories in the last 4 weeks.

Overall, it is predominantly clear that buying fresh coffee is the least preferred option among the people in all five cities whereas people from four out of five surveyed cities prefer to go to cafe as their most favorite way to consume coffee or tea. Buying instant coffee sits between buying fresh coffee and going to a cafe.

In terms of going to a cafe to have coffee or tea, Melbourne is at top with nearly 63% of the participants went to a cafe in the last 4 weeks, followed by Hobart with 62.5%, Sydney with 61% and Brisbane with 51%. Adelaide is the only city where going to a cafe is the second preferred option and buying instant coffee is the most preferred way to have coffee or tea with 50% of the respondents prefer to buy instant coffee.

On the contrary, in Sydney, 44% of the participants prefer to buy fresh coffee followed by Melbourne with 42% and Hobert with 37% and Adelaide and Brisbane where the least number of people prefer to by fresh coffee. Buying instant coffee is the second favorite option among four out of five cities with Hobert with 54% followed by Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in between 45% to 54

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart across the five Australian cities and three categories. An overview is provided, noting general trends such as fresh coffee being the least preferred overall and café visits being the most popular in most cities. Key comparisons are made, such as highlighting Melbourne and Hobart for café visits, and identifying Adelaide as an exception where instant coffee is preferred. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some of the data points reported compared to the raw data (e.g., stating Hobart's café figure is 62.5% when it is around 63%, and Brisbane's café figure as 51% instead of 55.5%), and the final sentence trails off without finishing. Despite these minor slips, the response covers the requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overall summary, and two body paragraphs detailing specific categories and cities. Cohesive devices and transition markers are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall, it is predominantly clear', 'In terms of', and 'On the contrary'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body points. However, referencing can occasionally feel repetitive or slightly mechanical, and the logical progression stumbles slightly in the final sentence due to an incomplete clause ('in between 45% to 54'). Overall arrangement remains coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, employing terms such as 'illustrates', 'predominantly clear', 'preferred option', 'participants', and 'respondents'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some lexical choices or collocations are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'most favorite' (instead of 'most popular' or 'favorite'), 'is at top' (instead of 'is at the top'), and spelling slips like 'Hobert' instead of 'Hobart'. Word choice errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control is adequate rather than flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and prepositional phrases. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'survey results of coffee and tea buying' (preposition choice), 'where going to a cafe is the second preferred option and buying instant coffee is the most preferred way' (run-on structure), and 'prefer to by fresh coffee' (spelling/form error: 'by' instead of 'buy'). Furthermore, the final sentence lacks a complete predicate ('in between 45% to 54'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not severely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 6 rating.
