Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and highlighting key trends and comparisons across the five Australian cities. The main features are accurately reported, noting that café visits are generally the most popular activity and drawing comparisons between fresh and instant coffee consumption. For instance, the student correctly points out that instant coffee is more preferred in most cities except Sydney and Melbourne where preferences are closer. Data points are cited accurately from the visual text (e.g., Melbourne and Hobart at 64% and 63% for cafes). The response is fully developed and well-grounded in the provided data, successfully meeting all requirements for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically into paragraphs, with an introduction containing an effective overview, followed by separate body paragraphs focusing on cafe visits, fresh coffee, and instant coffee. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader, such as 'To begin with', 'Moving on', and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is managed sufficiently and appropriately. While cohesion is mostly smooth, minor mechanical links prevent it from reaching the highest band, but overall the structure is fully coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to the academic task, utilizing terms such as 'illustrates', 'residents', 'consumption rate', and 'markedly'. There are occasional slight lexical inaccuracies, such as 'type's of coffees' and 'it's residents' (which also strays into grammar), but these do not impede communication. Less common vocabulary items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'lead with the highest consumption rate' and 'prefer visiting cafes'. To reach a higher band, the student could employ more sophisticated synonyms and varied phrasing to avoid slight repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'accounting for 55% and 49% respectively'). There are some minor grammatical errors present, particularly punctuation and apostrophe usage, such as 'type's of coffees' instead of 'types of coffee' and 'it's residents' instead of 'its residents'. However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and complex structures are generally controlled well. These infrequent errors do not impede communication, demonstrating a solid command of grammar appropriate for a band 7 level.
