Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to summarize the chart by identifying main features and making some comparisons across the five Australian cities. An overview is provided, stating that a high percentage of people visited cafés except in Adelaide, and that fresh coffee had the lowest overall percentage. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and imprecise figures, such as claiming café visits were above 60% in Hobart, Melbourne, and Sydney (though Adelaide was 49.5%, Brisbane was 55.5%), and minor data misreadings for instant coffee. The information is somewhat underdeveloped and suffers from a lack of clear data structuring, placing it at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introductory sentence, an overview, and body paragraphs beginning with transition words like 'To commence' and 'Furthermore'. However, the logical progression is hindered by choppy sentence structures and confusing phrasing. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are awkwardly deployed (e.g., repeating 'in last 4 weeks' multiple times awkwardly across sentences). Paragraphing is attempted, but overall cohesion is mechanical and strained, earning a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms from the prompt such as 'percentage', 'people', 'coffee', 'cities', and 'last 4 weeks'. There are noticeable spelling and word formation errors, such as 'brought' instead of 'bought', 'coffe' instead of 'coffee', 'Hobat' and 'Melboume' for city names, and 'Sydeney'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, these persistent errors and limited lexical variety restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical accuracy is low. There are frequent errors in verb tense and form (e.g., 'people went to a cafe and brought coffee and tea reached at the highest percentag', 'trend of bough instant coffee was in fluctuation'), missing prepositions, and punctuation errors. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede fluent communication, aligning with Band 5.0 descriptors.
