Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover all three categories across the five cities, but the execution suffers from significant inaccuracies in data reporting and misinterpretation of the chart categories. For instance, the category 'Went to a café for coffee or tea' is frequently referred to as 'coffee or tea in last 4 weeks' with values that do not match the chart accurately (e.g., claiming Sydney was 60% when it is actually 61%, and stating Adelaide was 38% instead of 49.5%). Furthermore, the overview statement claims that coffee or tea showed a 'significant increase over the time', which is incorrect as the chart shows data from a single 4-week period rather than a time progression. Due to these data misreadings and a flawed overview, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay attempts a logical structure by dividing the body paragraphs geographically and introducing them with sequencing words like 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Secondly'. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped, and the overall progression is confused by inaccurate data references. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as repetitive transitions like 'escalate over the time' and awkward linking phrases. Paragraph breaks do not clearly separate distinct trends or comparisons. This level of organisation corresponds to a Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like 'contribution', 'escalate', and 'in last 4 weeks'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'Brisban' instead of Brisbane, 'habit' instead of habits, and misuse of the verb 'escalate' to describe static survey percentages rather than a temporal trend. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic facts, though errors in word choice sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns with a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex sentences contain grammatical errors, such as missing verbs or faulty predication (e.g., 'adelaide and hobart has gradually escalate in instant coffee in last 4 weeks has 50% and 52% respectively'). Subject-verb agreement errors are frequent (e.g., 'adelaide and hobart has', 'sydney had... 60%'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, with proper nouns like 'sydney', 'melbourne', and 'adelaide' left lowercase in several instances. Frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
