Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response makes an attempt to address the prompt by identifying general trends from the chart, such as noting that visiting cafes was popular in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart, and mentioning instant versus fresh coffee consumption. However, the development of ideas remains limited and somewhat repetitive. Certain details are partially inaccurate or generalised, such as stating that fresh coffee was at its least in Brisbane and Adelaide without fully capturing the nuances of the data. The overview is rudimentary and lacks a polished synthesis of the main trends. To reach the next level, the writer needs to provide a clearer, more fully developed overview and select and compare key features with greater precision and depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response suffers from significant organizational issues that hinder clear progression. Although it attempts to use transitional expressions like 'Overall' and 'However', the overall arrangement lacks logical flow and coherence. The text is presented as one dense block of writing rather than being properly divided into logical paragraphs for an introduction, overview, and body details. Furthermore, referencing is frequently unclear, with pronouns and cohesive devices used inaccurately or mechanically, making the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Improving paragraphing and using a wider, more accurate range of cohesive ties would substantially enhance the readability and logical structure of the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with noticeable word choice and word form errors that occasionally impede communication. Examples include awkward phrasing such as 'most consume thing', 'physicaly attending', and 'fresh coffee brought'. Additionally, spelling errors such as 'Brsbane', 'Adeaide', 'Hobrat', and 'coffe' detract from the quality of the response. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'percentage', but these are often used inaccurately or with incorrect collocations. To progress, the student must expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to word forms and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is restricted, relying primarily on basic sentence structures with frequent errors in complex formations. There are noticeable mistakes in verb forms, tense usage, and agreement, such as 'people... consumes', 'fresh coffee brought' (used instead of a passive or active verb phrase), and 'more then' (confusing 'than' with 'then'). Punctuation and article usage also show persistent inaccuracies that cause some difficulty for the reader. While simple sentences are generally understandable, attempts at longer or more complex structures frequently result in faulty syntax. A broader variety of error-free sentence structures and better control over grammatical boundaries are required to move up.
