Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on all three categories across the five Australian cities. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, highlighting key overall trends such as Melbourne's dominance in cafe visits and Hobart's in instant coffee purchases. The student effectively selects and compares main features, such as contrasting Sydney's high fresh coffee consumption with Brisbane's higher instant coffee figures. However, there is a tendency to mechanically list data points in the body paragraphs rather than fully extending and synthesising all comparisons, which keeps the response at this solid level rather than pushing it higher. Data is reported accurately overall, aligning well with the visual source.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and structured body paragraphs that separate the categories logically. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'In contrast', 'First of all', and 'Moreover'. However, some of the referencing and linking feels slightly mechanical or repetitive, and sentences like 'followed by Hobart represented the percentage of 63%' disrupt the smooth progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the cafe/instant coffee data from the fresh coffee data, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs occasionally feels clunky due to repetitive phrasing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'proportion', 'ratio', 'percentage', and 'individuals'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but this is sometimes marred by awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'the highest the highest percentage', 'recorded more percentage', and 'comprised of almost'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical control lacks precision and flexibility, with repetitive use of basic reporting verbs and phrases like 'showed the percentage of' and 'represented the ratio'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'people who went to a cafe for a coffee or a tea'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structural patterns present throughout, such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms ('who to went to a cafe', 'Hobart represented the percentage of 63%'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the grammar score from rising into the higher band.
