Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by identifying overall trends and reporting some data from the chart, such as noting that going to a café was the most popular activity and mentioning figures for fresh and instant coffee. However, the development is limited and some information is inaccurate or inadequately supported. For example, the student states that Adelaide recorded the least percentage of café visits at 59%, whereas the chart shows Adelaide at approximately 49.5%. Additionally, typographical errors in the data reporting, such as '535' instead of '53%', reflect under-developed presentation. The overview is present but lacks sufficient clarity and precision to progress to a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different categories. Logical progression is attempted, but referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitions between sentences and ideas can feel abrupt, and cohesive devices are minimally used. While the structure is generally clear enough to follow, paragraphing and referencing need more skilful management to achieve a smoother flow and clearer progression throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are numerous typos and basic spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'bargraph', 'illustrstes', 'the the', 'survery', 'coffe', 'melbourbe', 'similarly' (uncapitalized), 'rainging', 'hight', 'recpectively', and 'percenatage'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to data reporting, the high frequency of lexical and spelling inaccuracies restricts the score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and moderately complex forms with frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with capitalization of proper nouns ('sydney', 'melbourbe', 'brisbane', 'adelaide', 'hobart'), missing articles ('going cafe', 'highest percenatage'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('brisbane and adelaide has', 'The figures for instant coffee was'). These frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and capitalization persist throughout the text and cause some distraction, though they do not completely obscure the overall meaning.
