Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the prompt by summarising data across the five cities, and an overall trend is provided in the second paragraph. However, some key features are under-developed, and the selection of data is sometimes uneven or lacks clarity. For instance, the discussion of Hobart includes confused figures, mentioning '38% more than one decade,' which does not accurately reflect the visual data. Similarly, comparisons between Brisbane and Adelaide are difficult to follow due to imprecise data reporting, such as stating instant coffee is '4% more' without clearly anchoring the baseline. To reach a higher level, you should ensure all reported figures are accurate, comparisons are clearly contextualised, and key trends are systematically highlighted without confusing details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the essay, with a distinct introduction, overall statement, and body paragraphs grouping the cities. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions such as 'After Analyzing the graphs it can be seen that' and 'In addition'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in the sentence structure describing Hobart. Cohesive devices are used somewhat repetitively or inaccurately. To improve, you should group your data more logically—such as by comparing coffee types or café visits across all cities rather than jumping randomly between categories—and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive ties to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the survey. There are noticeable lexical and spelling errors, such as 'purchase' instead of 'purchasing', 'individual' instead of 'individuals', and unusual expressions like 'person buy fresh coffee'. While attempts are made to use task-specific vocabulary, inaccurate word choices and word formation issues occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary range, pay closer attention to word forms (nouns, verbs, adjectives), and use more precise collocational phrases appropriate for academic data reporting, such as 'proportion', 'consumption', and 'preference'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text relies on a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, missing articles, and awkward prepositions. For example, 'individual visit to cafe for tea or coffee is accounted for 62%' contains errors in singular/plural agreement and passive voice construction. Furthermore, punctuation is weak, with run-on ideas and unusual symbols like '•/•' used instead of percent signs. To improve, you need to work on forming accurate simple and complex sentences, ensuring correct verb forms, proper article usage, and reliable punctuation to prevent your errors from hindering the reader's comprehension.
