Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five Australian cities. In the overview, you correctly highlight key extremes, such as Melbourne leading for café visits and Hobart for instant coffee purchases. Throughout the body paragraphs, you accurately select and report specific data points, such as Melbourne's approximately 64% for café visits and Sydney's 44% for fresh coffee. While the reporting is mostly accurate, some ideas tend to list data mechanically rather than extending the comparison further. To reach a higher level, you could better synthesize the data by grouping cities with similar trends, such as comparing the preference for instant versus fresh coffee across all locations more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your writing maintains a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and overview. However, the organization of the body paragraphs shows some mechanical features. Instead of grouping information logically by category—such as discussing café visits, instant coffee, and fresh coffee in distinct, well-organized paragraphs—you rely heavily on a linear sequence of transitional markers like 'First of all,' 'In addition,' 'Moreover,' and 'Furthermore.' This makes the progression feel somewhat repetitive and mechanical. Additionally, paragraphing could be improved by separating the three different survey categories into distinct paragraphs to enhance the logical flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'proportion,' 'percentage,' 'ratio,' and 'individuals.' You also attempt some less common vocabulary and appropriate paraphrasing of the prompt. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'went to the cafe for coffee or tea' instead of varying the phrasing more naturally, and minor repetitive use of reporting verbs like 'represented' and 'showed.' These vocabulary errors and limitations do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively, such as 'Melbourne represented the highest percentage of people who went to the cafe for coffee or tea.' There is a good control of verb tenses and basic structures. However, some minor grammatical errors persist, including occasional missing articles or slight preposition slips within grammatical patterns, such as 'went to a cafe for a coffee.' These errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your meaning, reflecting a solid foundation with room for greater structural variety and higher accuracy.
