Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and trends across the five Australian cities. An overview is provided, highlighting the general dominance of cafe visits and instant coffee over fresh coffee. Data points are appropriately selected and cited to support the descriptions, such as mentioning Melbourne's top position for cafe visits at around 64%. However, the response sits at this level because some comparisons and details are slightly under-developed or lack deeper extension. For instance, while the data for individual cities is listed, the relationships between the three categories within specific cities could have been more fully integrated. Furthermore, there are some minor data discrepancies in the body paragraphs compared to the visual source, such as the figure for Brisbane's fresh coffee consumption or Adelaide's cafe visits, which show slight over-generalisation or reading inaccuracies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically by category rather than by city, which creates a well-structured approach to comparing the data. Paragraphing is used effectively, with a distinct introduction, an overall summary paragraph, and three body paragraphs dedicated to each of the three survey categories. Cohesive devices are employed appropriately to guide the reader through the data, using phrases like 'Overall', 'Looking first at', 'Regarding', and 'Turning to'. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional transitional transitions feel somewhat mechanical, which prevents the response from reaching the highest bands of cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary is used for the task. The student attempts less common vocabulary and functional reporting phrases such as 'consistently recorded the highest figure', 'occupied the top position', and 'accounted for approximately'. However, there are some lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as spelling 'highest' as 'hightest' in the second paragraph, and repetitive phrasing when introducing data points. Word choice errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the intended meaning, but they restrict the lexical score to this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writing exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures, featuring frequent error-free sentences and solid control of grammar and punctuation. The student successfully constructs complex sentences using subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'followed by Hobart, Sydney, and Brisbane, whose figures stood at approximately...' and 'while Sydney ranked first, at around 43%'. Control over verb forms, tenses, and prepositions is generally strong. A few minor slips occur, but grammar and punctuation errors are infrequent and never impede communication, reflecting a strong command of sentence mechanics.
