Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at only 70 words and leaving the sentence unfinished. Consequently, the task is addressed only minimally and partially. While the writer attempts an overview ('Overall, cafe visits remain the highest in a month'), the information presented is extremely limited and under-developed. Important features and comparisons from the five Australian cities are largely omitted because the text cuts off so early. To reach higher bands, the response must be fully developed with adequate supporting data and meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Information and ideas are not arranged coherently due to the extreme brevity of the text. Although basic cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'Overall', 'While', and 'Moreover', the progression of ideas is severely disrupted because the response ends mid-sentence ('...with'). Paragraphing is also disrupted by the incomplete nature of the writing. To improve coherence and cohesion, the response needs a logical structure that links an introduction, overview, and detailed body paragraphs into a fully formed essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited, containing spelling errors ('indviduals', 'australian', 'buyng') and inaccurate word forms ('purchasing of fresh coffee witness', 'instant buyers of coffee'). These errors reflect a basic and restricted range of vocabulary that occasionally causes difficulty for the reader. While there are some attempts at topic-related terms like 'fresh coffee', 'instant coffee', and 'cafe', the lack of precision and control keeps the lexical resource at a lower level. To improve, the writer should focus on accurate spelling, correct word forms, and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple or flawed sentence structures. There are frequent errors, such as a major punctuation and agreement error ('Their is a high percentage') and missing sentence closure due to the unfinished response. Other slips include capitalization issues ('indviduals', 'australian'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with accurate punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and error-free sentence construction.
