Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, stopping at only 100 words. While the candidate attempts to discuss elements of the chart such as coffee and tea habits in cities like Melbourne and Sydney, the task is addressed only partially. Key data points are misread or confused, such as stating that 61% of people in Sydney bought instant coffee when that figure actually represents café visits, and citing incorrect percentages like '64%' and '52%' which do not align with the visual data. The overview is rudimentary and lacks a comprehensive summary of the main features across all five cities.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation attempted through introductory referencing, but the response lacks clear overall progression. The text is presented in a single, block-like paragraph with minimal appropriate paragraphing. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, relying on repetitive transitions like 'similarly', 'moreover', and 'on the other hand' without establishing clear logical links between sentences. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which data points correspond to which cities or habits.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted to simple terms directly lifted or approximated from the prompt, such as 'coffee', 'tea', 'cities', and 'percentage'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, including 'servarel' for several, 'melbourn' for Melbourne, 'slighty' for slightly, 'avarge' for average, and 'slightkt' for slightly. These limitations and frequent inaccuracies restrict the range of vocabulary and occasionally impede clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in punctuation and sentence structure, such as run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation ('The chart illustrate the practice... sydney, melbourne, brisbane, adelaide, hobart'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues like 'The chart illustrate', incorrect verb forms such as 'bought instant coffee instant', and missing capitalization for proper nouns ('australia', 'sydney', 'melbourne'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader.
