IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph illustrates the routines of people who either like to drink coffee or tea bought from a cafe within five cities in Australia. The number of people are shown as a percentage of the city residents.

Overall, it could be observed that the percentage of residents who went to a cafe for coffee or tea in the last 4 weeks remained high throughout the cities , except Adelaide where slightly more people preferred to buy instant coffee. Also, people who like to buy fresh coffee in last four weeks remained lower in each city of Australia.

Additionally, the people who went to cafe for tea or coffee remained substantially higher than people who bought fresh and/or instant coffee in three cities Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart, rising more than 60% of the total residents who prefer that in each of them. Meanwhile, there is still growth of people who went to cafe for tea or coffee, rising to 56% in Brisbane and 48% in Adelaide when compared to people buying fresh coffee with around same amount of 34% and 34.5% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the main parts of the task by identifying the key trends across the five Australian cities and making relevant comparisons. An overview is provided, noting the general popularity of visiting cafes compared to buying fresh coffee, which meets the core requirements. However, certain aspects are under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the description of Adelaide's habits contains minor confusion, and some data points lack precise comparative depth. To reach a higher level, the writer should ensure all major features and contrasts are fully elaborated and supported with accurate details without generalising or missing nuanced data points from the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response achieves a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing and structuring the essay. Information flows logically from an introduction to an overview, followed by specific body paragraph details. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Overall,' 'Additionally,' and 'Meanwhile,' though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. The progression is generally clear, but bridging between sentences could be smoother to fully meet the higher band criteria. To improve further, the writer should refine referencing and ensure seamless logical transitions between supporting details.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic meanings related to surveys, percentages, and consumer habits (e.g., 'residents', 'percentage', 'substantially higher'). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but there are instances of slight inaccuracy in word choice and collocation, such as 'routines of people who either like to drink coffee' or referring to a growth of people rather than an increase in the proportion. These errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate a more precise and flexible range of lexical items with fewer word-choice slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions successfully. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions or awkward phrasing like 'The number of people are shown' (agreement issue) and spacing before commas. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over subject-verb agreement and prepositions.
