Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response is largely off-topic, as the student has written about a completely different prompt concerning tourists visiting a Caribbean island rather than the actual provided chart about coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities. Because the content does not correspond to the visual data presented in the prompt, the response fails to address the core requirements of the task. While there is an attempt to summarize information and make comparisons, the mismatch in topic means that no relevant features of the actual data are reported. To achieve a higher band, it is essential that the response directly addresses the specific visual data provided in the prompt rather than relying on a memorized or unrelated template.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text exhibits some organizational structure with discernible paragraphs and basic overall progression. The student attempts to use cohesive devices and introductory phrases, such as 'Overall, it is clear that' and 'Turning to', but referencing and linking are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Turning to visitors staying ships' lacks grammatical precision and clarity. Paragraphing is used, but the logical development of ideas is hindered by the off-topic content. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive devices are used more accurately and that information is sequenced in a way that creates a smoother, more transparent progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for basic descriptive writing, but it contains noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'carribben', 'totale', 'increas', 'remaind', and 'followea'. Furthermore, collocations are sometimes awkward, such as 'staying ships' instead of 'visitors staying on cruise ships'. The range is restricted, and attempts at less common vocabulary result in frequent spelling slips. To reach a higher band, the student must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to word formation, and ensure accurate spelling throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often faulty, such as in the sentence 'where visitors staying on island similar increase at around 0.7 to 1.5 million', which lacks a main verb and is structurally incomplete. Other errors include missing articles ('stood at 1 millions', 'total number of visitor') and incorrect prepositions and verb forms. To improve, the student needs to work on basic sentence construction, ensure that every sentence contains a finite verb, and exercise greater control over tense consistency and agreement.
