Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 97 words. Because of this severe under-length, the task is addressed only minimally. While the writer attempts to introduce the chart and make general observations, the response lacks a proper overview and fails to report the main features or make relevant comparisons across the five cities. Figures are either vague or inaccurately referenced, such as stating the percentage of fresh and instant coffee was 'almost same that was 45%'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must write at least 150 words, provide a clear overall summary of the main trends shown in the visual data, and accurately report specific city data with meaningful comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates some basic organizational structure with opening and transitional phrases like 'To commence with', but the information and ideas are not arranged coherently. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences are fragmented and the overall progression of ideas is very limited. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, resulting in an unclear flow between sentences. For example, the sentence starting with 'overall, this is clearly seen that' is awkwardly linked and disrupts the logical development. To improve, the writer needs to ensure ideas are logically sequenced with clear referencing, use cohesive devices accurately, and structure the text into well-defined paragraphs that guide the reader smoothly through the reported data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, showing a limited range that is only minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'purchasing habits', 'individual's drinking pattern', and 'gradually inclined', but these attempts are marred by noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'fresh coffee like less as compare to instant coffee' and 'trend to went cafe'. There are also awkward phrasings that cause some difficulty for the reader. To move to a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, use appropriate collocations for describing statistical data, and ensure precise word choice when discussing percentages, trends, and consumption habits.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent errors are present throughout the text, including tense issues, missing prepositions, incorrect verb forms, and punctuation mistakes. Examples of these errors include 'overall, this is clearly seen that majority of proportion went to cafe', 'fresh coffee like less', and 'trend to went cafe was gradually inclined'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and distort meaning. To improve, the writer needs to practice constructing accurate simple and complex sentences, pay closer attention to articles and prepositions, and ensure better control over basic grammatical agreements.
