Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and tangentially, failing to present a clear overview or accurately report the key features and data from the bar chart. While the writer attempts to mention cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart, the figures cited (such as claiming Sydney had 48 percent for fresh coffee when it was actually 44 percent) are frequently inaccurate and confused. The text misinterprets the categories of coffee and tea, creating a disorganised summary that lacks a coherent understanding of the visual data. To reach a higher level, the writer must accurately extract and compare numerical data from the prompt, avoiding random guessing of figures and ensuring that a clear, comprehensive overview of all categories is provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some attempt at organisation by dividing the text into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure. Sentences are disjointed and difficult to follow, such as the abrupt transitions between cities and categories. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, making the text read as a series of disconnected, confusing statements rather than a unified report. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak, with ideas overlapping without logical sequencing. To improve, the writer needs to use clear organizational structures, logical transitions between sentences and paragraphs, and precise referencing to guide the reader smoothly through the data comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic, highly repetitive, and frequently incorrect, with frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that significantly strain the reader. Examples of lexical failures include writing "chat" instead of chart, "silimlar", "compariosn", "categorie", "accountes", "hgher", "brishbane", "recidents", "pecent", and "smilir". The writer struggles with basic terminology related to data reporting and beverage habits. To move to a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, learn accurate spelling of common English words and geographical terms, and use precise vocabulary related to charts and statistics, such as proportion, percentage, significant, and category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting predominantly of heavily flawed simple and attempted complex sentences. Errors are frequent throughout the text, including severe issues with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and sentence fragments (e.g., "The bar chat compare the result shows of a survey...", "looking first at Sydney has a figure of higher bought fresh coffee...", and "overview, the want to buy people coffee or tea in last 4 weeks is rose to bought..."). These persistent errors frequently distort the meaning and cause considerable difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate control over basic sentence structures, improve verb tense consistency, and eliminate fundamental grammatical errors.
