IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart illustrates the percentages of residents in five Australian cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart) who engaged in three different coffee and tea consumption habits over the preceding four weeks. Overall, visiting a café for coffee or tea was the most popular activity in four of the five cities, whereas purchasing fresh coffee was consistently the least common practice across all location categories. Additionally, instant coffee purchase rates showed moderate to high popularity in every city. In terms of café attendance, Melbourne recorded the highest proportion at roughly 63%, closely followed by Hobart (around 62.5%) and Sydney (61%). Brisbane also saw more than half of its population visiting cafés (nearly 56%), whereas Adelaide was the only city where café visits were surpassed by another category, standing at just under 50%. Regarding coffee purchases, buying instant coffee was preferred over fresh coffee in all five cities. Hobart had the highest percentage of residents purchasing instant coffee at approximately 54%, followed by Brisbane (nearly 53%) and Adelaide (50%). In Sydney and Melbourne, these figures were slightly lower, at around 45.5% and 48% respectively. Conversely, fresh coffee purchases were lowest in Brisbane and Adelaide (both under 35%), while Sydney recorded the highest rate at nearly 44%, followed by Melbourne (around 42%) and Hobart (38%)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and effectively reporting the main features of the chart. Key trends and comparisons between the five Australian cities are highlighted, such as the overall popularity of visiting cafes compared to buying fresh coffee. The figures cited, such as Melbourne's café attendance at roughly 63% and Hobart's instant coffee purchases at approximately 54%, accurately reflect the visual data provided. The information is well-selected, and the response maintains a clear focus throughout without any irrelevant details. To reach the highest level, the student could incorporate even more precise data interweaving or sharper comparative insights across all three categories simultaneously.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing café attendance and coffee purchasing habits. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different consumption habits. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or formulaic, particularly in the transitions between sentences and cities (e.g., repeating structures like 'followed by' and 'whereas'). While referencing is generally clear, the organization meets the criteria fully for a solid performance while showing part of the next level through its clear logical progression, though smoother and less predictable cohesive devices are still needed to reach full mastery.

Lexical Resource: Band 8.0

The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible vocabulary range suitable for an academic task. Less common lexical items are used skilfully to describe statistical data, such as 'proportion', 'prevailing practice', 'proportion', and 'respectively'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate and natural, as seen in phrases like 'engaged in three different coffee and tea consumption habits' and 'recorded the highest proportion'. Only occasional minor inaccuracies or less polished phrasing prevent an even higher standing, but the current range allows for precise and varied reporting of the chart's details without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

A wide range of sentence structures is used effectively throughout the text, incorporating both simple and complex forms with a high degree of control. The majority of sentences are completely error-free. The writer demonstrates strong command over complex clauses, relative clauses, and introductory prepositional phrases, such as 'In terms of café attendance, Melbourne recorded...' and 'Conversely, fresh coffee purchases were lowest...'. Grammar and punctuation are handled with great precision, with only very occasional minor slips that never impede communication. This strong control over varied grammatical structures firmly underpins the high level achieved.
