Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the main categories of the survey across the five Australian cities. An overall trend is provided at the beginning, noting that visiting cafes was the most popular activity overall, while fresh coffee purchases were generally lowest. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the statement that 'Bought instant coffee were show moderate proportion' lacks specific figures or a clear comparative synthesis. Furthermore, some comparisons lack precision, and certain details are under-developed or expressed unclearly, such as the claim regarding the biggest proportion for fresh coffee in Sydney without contrasting it adequately with other locations. To move to a higher band, the response needs to present a fully developed overview and ensure all key features are systematically supported with precise data and clear comparative statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to structure the information logically into separate paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific categories. However, cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical. Words and phrases used to guide the reader are sometimes awkward, such as 'Looking at first the Melbourne and Hobart city', which disrupts the natural flow of information. Referencing and linking devices are occasionally misused or absent, making the progression between sentences less smooth than required for higher bands. To improve, you should focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensuring that each paragraph transitions logically into the next without abrupt shifts in focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully covering the core concepts of coffee and tea habits. However, the range is limited and contains noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation. Examples include 'consequences regarding' instead of 'data regarding', 'puchasing' (spelling error), 'went cafe' instead of 'visited cafes', and 'second larget people' instead of 'second largest proportion of people'. These lexical inaccuracies and awkward word forms sometimes require the reader to slow down, though they do not completely impede communication. To reach a higher level, you need to expand your vocabulary range, incorporate less common lexical items accurately, and pay closer attention to word forms and standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting to connect ideas using relative clauses and comparative structures. Nevertheless, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. These include issues with verb forms and tense usage, such as 'prefer to went cafe for taking', subject-verb agreement errors like 'Bought instant coffee were show', and missing articles or prepositions in phrases like 'the Adelaide city was lowest proportion in went cafe bar'. While communication is maintained despite these errors, they occur regularly and impact the overall control of grammar and punctuation. To achieve a higher band, you must demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures and eliminate frequent errors in basic grammatical patterns, verb tenses, and prepositions.
